An innocent mistake that resulted in a major scam involving nine employees, proving that no matter how robust systems are, they will be tested as people discover the weakest link.
An employee accidentally transposed cash and voucher income on the cash sheet, under banking £10. Expecting a call when posted vouchers didn’t match the declared figure, nothing happened.
The employee did it again, this time declaring an inflated voucher income, to cream off more cash. Again, and again he did it, each time telling another employee until nine were regularly stealing thousands of pounds.
The scam got rumbled and all nine now have a criminal record. This was allowed to happen though because someone at head office was on maternity leave, and her task of matching vouchers received against vouchers declared, was never taken on by anyone else.
