Alton towers resort theme park gets to grips with stock control

“Increasingly, tourist attraction operators and other leisure businesses are recognising the essential part controlled food and drink operations can play in growing overall profits.”

1. The Brief: Stocktaking at UK Tourist Attraction

Well-known UK tourist attraction, Alton Towers Resort, contacted Venners to begin their stock control journey at four of their on-site hotels. This was not just to go through the motions of introducing standardised stocktaking. Their operational team was looking to deepen their understanding of the stock results and had a vision to increase not only controls, but ultimately, profitability too.

2. The Setup: Bespoke Tailoring to the Client’s Needs

Following an initial consultation to discuss requirements and specifications with the Venners business development representative, a team of seven stocktakers began to work with the sites. The sites had never before received as detailed or accurate stock results as Venners reports provided, neither had they received the added value of experts in the field who would identify issues outside of the normal stock count remit.

3. The Results: Operational Data to Improve Margins

The Venners stock results introduced the sites to monitoring individual PLU variances, enabling further improvements to be made to their stock control in the long run. Operational issues were also spotted during the stocktakes and were advised to the Alton Towers Resort teams. Transfer processes, cocktail specifications, security and training requirements were all areas that could be improved upon and, if addressed, could aid in maximising margins across all sites.

4. The Future: Training to Further Performance

Given the insight that the Alton Towers Resort management and operational teams received, they realised the further benefit educating staff could bring and therefore agreed to bring in Venners consultants who would deliver two training courses. In December 2020 their finance and operations teams were coached on how to analyse stock results, as well as how to achieve a change in mind-sets within the business and inspire corrective actions to improve overall stock performance.
