Company Founded by Edwin Venner a Chartered
Accountant from a brewing family.
1914-1918
General & Government concern that munitions
workers may consume alcohol during the daytime.
Edwin Venner assisted Government with licensing
laws through the Defence of the Realm Act in
1914 so that pubs would open after work had
commenced & close in the afternoons. Edwin would
later receive a knighthood for his efforts.
1920's
Venners sell the freehold to their Bishopsgate
premises to National Provincial Bank in 1924 &
some years later the NatWest Tower was
constructed on the redeveloped site. In 1924,
both the Forest Hill Brewery & the family’s pubs
were sold to Whitbread.
1930's
Moved to temporary offices in Plaistow Lane,
Bromley in Kent due to outbreak of war.
1940's
Edwin Venner retires in July 1946 & John L
Venner appointed joint managing director with
Harold White. Harold White dies within the year
leaving John L Venner as governing director in
July 1947. Company pension scheme introduced in
July 1949.
1950's
Sir Edwin Venner awarded his Knighthood. Michael
and David Venner appointed to the board in 1955.
1960's
Venners purchased a main frame computer &
produced first computerised results in 1965.
Offices in Bishopsgate vacated due to
redevelopment. The business moved to Tooley
Street, near London Bridge. The National
Westminster Bank Tower was built on the site of
the Bishopsgate office. Processing bureau (EJV
Data Services) established in 1967.
1970's
Optical Character Reader installed for the first
time in 1971. First office outside London opened
in Manchester in 1973, followed by Croydon,
Edinburgh, Bournemouth and Milton Keynes. Derek
Fitch appointed to the board in 1977 as I.T.
Director.
1980's
Venners bought by Christie Group of Companies in
1984. Acquired Adstock Stocktaking Company in
Edinburgh in 1985. Introduction of on-site
results with laptop computers for all stock
auditors. Introduction of Inventory for fixtures
and fittings both listing & valuation. Moved
offices from Tooley Street to George Row, near
Tower Bridge. Michael Callis appointed as
Managing Director.
1990's
All regional offices closed in 1992 following
technology update. 1994 Tenancy Broking division
established. 1995 Vision 2000 launched. 1996;
Derek Fitch appointed as Managing Director,
Centenary Party at the Waldorf Hotel in London,
Retail Division established. 1999 first results
sent via e-mail.
2000’s
We merged our Inventory & Tenancy Broking divisions and in 2002 Trevor Heyburn was appointed Managing Director. After trading in London for 107 years we moved to Harlow in 2003 and by 2005 we introduced our Compliance Audit Service. In 2006 we established a separate Audit Division and sold our Retail Stocktaking business to our sister company Orridge. 2007 saw us establish a Health & Safety Division and release our VenPowa Software and in 2010 we introduced specialised Consultancy and Pub Tenancy Support.
